WE LOVE GRANDPARENTS!

It’s National Grandparents Day! Whether you’re a grandparent, grandchild, or both, today is the day to get the family together. This day was initiated by Marian McQuade, along with her husband Joseph McQuade, who hoped it would encourage people to visit the elderly who lived in nursing homes. Marian had a strong desire to connect generations, which began when she was a young girl visiting her grandmother on her farm. She was close with her grandmother along with their elderly neighbours. She advocated and provided support for the elderly through out her life, eventually getting appointed to the White House Conference on Aging. Her and her husband had 15 children and 43 grandchildren, can you imagine the size of their family gatherings?!  
   I remember the entire family heading to grandmother’s house for dinner during holidays. All the uncles, aunties, cousins, nephews, and in-laws would show up, it was absolute chaos, but it was the type of chaos that one could never get tired of. I once saw a quote that said, “grandparent is a little bit parent, a little bit teacher, and a little bit best friend.” I couldn’t agree more. From the irreplaceable home cooked feasts, to nagging about the generation gaps, to sharing embarrassing stories about their children in front of their grandchildren, spending time with grandparents will always be something I look forward to. In the future, when I become a grandparent, I know for sure that I would take every opportunity to bond with my grandchildren.
    It is Grandparents Day! We encourage you to pick up the phone and call your loved ones, cook a dinner and invite the family over, and most importantly, tell them you love them. It really is the perfect day to honor grandparents and show love to grandchildren, and for grandchildren to learn more about their loved ones.
