Who is Shanna Groves?
One week ago we discovered this strong and courageous mom. By reading her blog "Lipreading Mom", I have not only learned about her story, but also the story of many new moms suffering both hearing loss and social pressure.
One day, Shanna Groves's doctor told her, "You're just going deaf, you need hearing aids."
Imagine the impact of hearing these words...
When she walked out of the doctor's office, she just told herself, "No way in heck I was going to wear hearing aids." She didn't pay attention to what doctors told her; She didn't want to be a hearing aid wearing mom.
Two years later, her son was old enough to talk. She couldn't understand a word he said. She went back to the doctor and asked him for those hearing aids.
That day she finally accepted her hearing loss.
Now Shanna Groves is an author and assumes her hearing loss in her daily life. She's a mom of three children.
She reminds her kids to look at her so she can lipread them.
According to the deafness research foundation, 17% of American adults report some degree of hearing loss. Many are parents or grandparents.
Have a look to this video in which she's talking about her book "Lip Reader" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz8th0EY1Zk
